Brava Roof Tile: The Look of Cedar, Slate and Clay Without the Upkeep

Love the look of a cedar shake, slate or clay tile roof but not the upkeep? Brava gets you there. It's a composite roof tile made to look like the real thing, and it doesn't soak up water, rot or need treating every few years. We're a Brava Authorized Contractor, and our own crews install it on homes across Chicagoland, Central Illinois, St. Louis and Tampa Bay.

What Is Brava Roof Tile?

Brava roof tile (some folks call them Brava shingles) is made from up to 95% recycled plastic, colored with natural mineral pigments all the way through, with UV stabilizers built in. Each tile is made to match the grain and edges of real cedar and slate, so it looks right from the street. It's made in the USA, no trees are cut and no quarries are dug to make it, and when it's eventually torn off, it's recyclable.

It comes in three looks:

  • Brava Shake: a synthetic cedar shake with the look of real cedar. We've installed it in Beechwood, Natural Cedar and Weathered.
  • Brava Slate: a synthetic slate with the look of natural stone, without the weight. We've installed it in Washington.
  • Brava Spanish Tile: the clay barrel tile look, a natural fit for Tampa Bay homes.

Why Homeowners Pick Brava

Built for Our Weather

  • No soaking, no rot. Brava’s closed cell material doesn’t absorb water, so freeze and thaw cycles don’t crack it and moss has nothing to grab onto.
  • Class 4 impact rating. The top rating for impact resistance.
  • Built for wind. Tested up to 188 mph with nails and 211 mph with a screw installation.

Built to Last

  • Class A fire rating available. Installed over one of Brava’s tested fire resistant underlayments, Brava reaches Class A, the highest fire rating a roof can get. We’ll tell you if your home needs it.
  • Light enough for most homes. Brava runs 257 to 430 pounds per 100 square feet, only a little heavier than a quality asphalt shingle and far lighter than real slate or clay.
  • Backed for the long haul. A 50 year limited warranty from Brava, plus our own labor warranty on the installation.

Brava vs the Real Thing

We install the real materials too, so we’ll tell you straight how each one stacks up. Most folks who come to us wanting real cedar end up choosing Brava once they see the two side by side.

Want the real thing anyway? We install real cedar (every type), natural slate and clay tile too.

Brava for HOAs and Condo Communities

Brava is a natural fit for communities. It comes in enough styles and colors to match your architectural guidelines, it's light enough to go on most buildings without structural changes, and every building ends up with the same look.

We can bid the whole community or go building by building, and phase the work around your residents. See our multi-family and HOA roofing page for more.

Brava Warranty, Plus Ours

Every Brava roof we install is covered twice:

  • Brava's 50 year limited warranty on the tiles. It covers the tiles against manufacturing defects, and the original owner can transfer it once to the next owner. We'll walk you through exactly what it covers in your estimate.
  • Our own labor warranty on the installation. If something we installed isn't right, we come back and make it right.

As a Brava Authorized Contractor, we can offer every Brava warranty available at that level, and we'll walk you through the options in your estimate.

What Affects the Cost of a Brava Roof

Every roof is priced on its own. These are the things that move the number:

  • Profile: shake, slate or Spanish tile
  • Roof size
  • Pitch and how walkable the roof is
  • Valleys, dormers, turrets and other details
  • What's coming off, and how many layers
  • Decking repairs found during tear off
  • Copper or other upgraded flashing
  • Gutters, skylights or ventilation work done at the same time

How We Install Brava Roof Tile

We install every Brava roof to Brava’s written installation guide. That’s what keeps your warranty valid.

Worn wood shake roof on a Novi, MI clubhouse before its Brava roof tile replacement
Before: the worn wood shake roof on a Novi community clubhouse we replaced with Brava Shake.
  1. Full tear off. Brava requires the old roof to come off for warranty coverage, and it’s the only way to see what’s underneath.
  2. Solid deck. Brava calls for at least 15/32″ plywood or 7/16″ OSB. We replace any soft or damaged decking before anything goes on top.
  3. Ice and water protection. Self adhering membrane from the eave to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall, and 36 inches wide in every valley. In our Midwest markets, that’s not optional.
  4. Underlayment. A premium underlayment that meets Brava’s specs over the rest of the deck. Where a Class A fire rating is needed, we use one of Brava’s tested fire resistant underlayments.
  5. Starter course and blended color. Starters along the eaves and rakes, and tiles pulled from several bundles so the color blends evenly across the roof.
  6. Two fasteners per tile. Corrosion resistant ring shank nails or screws, driven at least 3/4″ into the deck and hidden under the next course.
  7. Metal valleys and flashing. W style metal valleys, step and counter flashing at chimneys and walls, and sealed sleeves at every pipe and vent. Copper is available.
  8. Hip and ridge caps sized to your roof’s pitch.
  9. Warranty registration. We complete and sign your Brava warranty registration within 30 days, as Brava requires.

Installing Brava in Tampa Bay. Florida roofs have to stand up to hurricane season, so we follow Brava’s high wind specs there: screws instead of nails, stainless steel fasteners for homes near salt water, and Brava’s high wind warranty registered on every roof that calls for it. Every job is built to the Florida Building Code.

FAQ

ask us
anything

From the street, most people can’t tell the difference between Brava and real cedar. Each tile is made to match the grain of real cedar, and the color runs all the way through. Ask us for a side by side photo of Brava next to real cedar on the same roof line.

Brava backs it with a 50 year limited lifetime warranty. Real cedar usually needs regular cleaning and treatment to reach its full life. Brava doesn’t.

It depends on the roof. Brava’s upfront cost is in the same range as other high end roofs, and you skip the cleaning and treatment cedar needs over the years. We’ll price both if you’d like to compare.

No. Brava requires a full tear off to keep the warranty valid, and it’s the only way to check the deck underneath.

Usually not. Brava runs 257 to 430 pounds per 100 square feet, close to a quality asphalt shingle and far lighter than real slate or clay tile. We check the structure during the estimate.

You can, but it’s best to keep foot traffic to a minimum. Leave it to the crew.

Brava’s 50 year limited warranty on the tiles, plus our own labor warranty on the installation. We’ll walk you through the details of both in your estimate.

Yes. We’ll show you the real material next to Brava and tell you honestly which one fits your home and budget.
